The UK Government Launches it's Expanded 'Connect the Classroom' Scheme for 2025/2026 to Boost Digital Learning
London, 6 May 2025— The UK government has today announced the next phase of its flagship Connect the Classroom programme, expanding its reach for the 2025/2026 academic year to ensure that more schools across the country benefit from high-speed, secure digital infrastructure.
Now in its fourth year, Connect the Classroom is a Department for Education (DfE) initiative aimed at transforming internet connectivity in schools, with a particular focus on under-resourced or rural areas. The updated scheme will invest an additional £25 million this financial year (2025/2026), providing eligible schools with state-of-the-art Wi-Fi systems, full-fibre broadband, and modern networking equipment.
What’s New in 2025/2026?
The 2025/2026 rollout introduces several key updates:
- Expanded eligibility: More schools in Education Investment Areas (EIAs) will qualify, including primary schools, pupil referral units, and special educational needs (SEN) settings.
- Cybersecurity upgrades: The new phase includes enhanced security protocols and firewalls to protect school networks and data from growing digital threats.
- Sustainability focus: New infrastructure will prioritise energy-efficient equipment and environmentally responsible installation practices.
The government will continue to collaborate with local authorities and the education sector to identify schools most in need. Schools will not be required to contribute financially; all infrastructure upgrades will be fully funded.
Digital Equality in Focus
Educational leaders have widely welcomed the move. The programme aligns with the government's long-term Digital Strategy for Education, which seeks to integrate technology into teaching and learning while reducing the digital divide that widened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
How Schools Can Apply
Eligible schools will be contacted directly by the Department for Education towards the end of May, and guided through the application and installation process. Further information and updates are available on the DfE website.
